Niko’s 10 Steps Sodding Process

Having installed thousands of new grass lawns across the GTA in general, and several hundred in Markham in particular, we’ve developed a well-defined & structured sodding process.

Our team will use a sod cutter to remove up to one inch of your existing grass. If you have existing sod that’s no longer healthy, we can provide sod removal services as part of the sod replacement process.

We remove remaining debris from the soil and rake it in order to break up large chucks of remaining foliage. Loose vegetation, stones, leaves, and other debris is collected and disposed of properly.

Triple mix soil is a combination of peat moss, soil, and compost. It contains an abundance of healthy nutrients which encourage root establishment and growth. A 1-inch layer is applied.

A wide landscaping rake is used to evenly distribute the soil. This creates a smooth and level surface for your new sod.

We lay rolls of Kentucky bluegrass sod from Zander Sod Farm end-to-end. Staggering the seams and following a brick-wall pattern prevents weeds and promotes strong growth.

Immediately after installation, we’ll water the sod thoroughly. Then we’ll use a lawn roller to press the sod into the soil. We roll horizontally and vertically to eliminate air pockets, encourage root establishment, and guarantee even compaction.

Once the sod is installed, our team will clean-up the site at no additional expense. We will collect and dispose of old sod or grass as well as debris, such as stick, stones, or leaves that were racked up before laying the sod.

Niko’s Gardening always disposes of waste responsibly and in accordance with local guidelines. This may involve disposing of grass and sod pieces in compost bins or taking them to green waste facilities.
